What is the need of regular Anesthesia Machine Repair?

What do you think, is this the time of the year you need to plan for the maintenance and calibration of your anesthesia units? Or maybe, you are starting to experience some issues in your operating room, and you require an expert for Anesthesia Machine Repair?

Below are the top 6 points you should ask your anesthesia machine repair company when performing the service:

1. Have the reading of your vaporizer concentration, which should be within the manufacturer’s details for the safety. The report should be official and kept on file. In case the values are out of specifications, the technician should suggest that your vaporizer be calibrated. Standardization cannot be performed on the site, as it takes 3 to 4 days to be done in a certified service centre.

2. Verify, clean and test your evacuation system. Because there is a lot of animal hair moving around the clinic, this can decrease its effectiveness. The stretch/release of the semi-active scavenger system should be reported and maintained on file. If inactive, you must ensure there is no resistance for your animal’s exhalation. If you have an active system, the flow meter may need to be maintained.

3. Modify the seals of your anesthesia unit. The closures on your unit may not be torn or damage during the maintenance. Yet, a part of the preventive maintenance is to prevent certain failures for the coming year. Closures are more prone to cracking over time, as O2 and ISO create a dry environment. Maintaining quick couplings when seals are dry may cause important leaks. This would be the cause, why they should be changed as a precaution.

4. Check the high and low pressure on your anesthesia unit for leaks and O2 loss. The Anesthesia Machine Repair Technician can coach your staff and advise them on daily leak testing.

5. Offer you with a detailed maintenance report to use as a reference, but also for scrutinizing records if necessary.

6. Clarify what was done on your anesthesia machine repair unit, share observations. The technician should also give you advice and suggestions to extend the life of your unit based on the findings.

How to do regular anesthesia machine repair?

Prerequisites: Oxygen supply: 40 to 60 psi (2.8 to 4.2 bars), patient circuit, and bag.

Remember: Replicate the following maintenance process for your 2 circuits (Bain & absorber).

Step 1- Join the circuit to be checked to the fresh gas outlet of the veterinary anesthesia machine.

Step 2- Shut down the patient’s circuit outlet with a plug or your thumb.

Step 3- Start the flow meter to approximately 200 ml.

Step 4- Shut down the gas evacuation valve.

Step 5- Deject the oxygen flush button and hold until the pressure on the manometer indicates nearly 30 cm H2O.

Step 6- Verify the manometer. The pressure must not drop (but it can increase). If the pressure drops, exchange the patient circuit and the bag and try again.

Step 7- Start the elimination valve before using the veterinary anesthesia machine again.

If you experience an excessive leak, it is suggested that you proceed by elimination to find the source of the problem by replacing a single component at a time. The most often leaks can be found at the fresh gas outlet o-ring, the patient circuit, and the bag.
